My experience and values

Rachel Fabian Therapy

Earlier in my career, I spent over 12 years working in community settings with children, young people, young adults and their families. In private practice, I have had the privilege of meeting people with diverse life experiences, strengths and vulnerabilities; from people facing severe crisis and trauma, to those wanting to more deeply reflect on themselves and their relationships.

I value warmth and connection in my work and recognise that while many people are seeking growth and change, this can be a challenging and painful process as well as a positive one.

Professional development, accountability and reflection are very important to me. I have regular clinical supervision with a Senior Clinical Psychologist who practices in child and adolescent mental health and family therapy. I also access specialist clinical supervision for professional development in key learning areas. I am part of a peer supervision group, a professional interest group in gender diversity and expression and regularly access clinical training and current, evidence-based research to inform my practice.

I chose to be a Social Worker because of my commitment to principles of social justice, equity and empowerment and I consider it a privilege to be alongside people as they grapple with the richness, rawness and complexities of their lives.

Therapeutic approaches

I use a number of different therapeutic approaches in my work. I often use Psychodynamic, Attachment and Family Systems theories because these approaches provide useful ways to tune in carefully to what's happening between our inner emotional world and our relationships. I am also very interested in the neurobiology of trauma, attachment and mental wellbeing and the ways in which our brains, bodies and life experiences are interconnected and mutually influencing. I find that other therapeutic techniques such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Mindfulness, Internal Family Systems, Narrative Therapy and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy can provide some very useful practical tools for symptom management and behavioural change.
